2026, 12 October, Mediterranea University of Reggio Calabria, Lorenzo Carmassi — “Building through Time: Architecture, Memory and Transformation”
Lorenzo Carmassi will give the lecture “Building through Time: Architecture, Memory and Transformation” at the Department of Architecture and Design (DAeD) of the Università degli Studi Mediterranea di Reggio Calabria.
The lecture is devoted to architectural restoration and explores the relationship between conservation, memory and transformation through principles developed within the work of Carmassi Studio di Architettura. Particular attention will be given to the authenticity of historic matter, the value of stratification, the recovery of spatial continuity, the measured introduction of contemporary elements and the understanding of restoration as a progressive process of knowledge.
Architecture is considered here as a continuity through time: the contemporary project does not close the history of a building, but becomes a further layer within it. Restoration is therefore understood not as a return to an idealised past, but as a means of preserving the identity and intelligibility of existing architecture while allowing it to accommodate new uses and a long future.
The lecture will be introduced by Prof. Alessandra Maniaci. Institutional greetings will be given by Prof. Consuelo Nava, Director of the DAeD, and Prof. Nino Sulfaro, Deputy Director of the Department. The event is curated by Dr Francesco Alberto Modafferi and Dr Francesco Lo Torto.
