Lorenzo and Massimo Carmassi in Profile Portraits
Who We Are - Architectural Identity 001

Who We Are

Carmassi Architecture stands as a benchmark for innovation in architecture and restoration on the international stage. Officially founded in Florence in 1997 by Massimo Carmassi and Gabriella Ioli, the practice had already been active in Pisa since the early 1970s. For over half a century, it has embodied architectural excellence.

Architectural Identity

Under the leadership of Massimo and Lorenzo Carmassi, the studio continues to evolve, maintaining a careful balance between historical preservation and contemporary functionality. Its distinctive design methodology — revitalizing prestigious historical buildings without compromising their essence — has made Carmassi Architecture a unique voice in the international architectural landscape.

Over the decades, the studio has earned the trust of a wide range of clients — from private individuals and entrepreneurs to institutions, municipalities, universities, foundations, and cultural organizations. These collaborations, often longstanding, reflect a shared commitment to architectural integrity, contextual sensitivity, and excellence in execution.

This identity is rooted in a working method that combines historical awareness, technical precision, and formal clarity. Whether dealing with ancient fabric, stratified urban contexts, or contemporary architectural programs, the studio approaches each commission as an opportunity to reveal latent spatial qualities, restore meaning to existing structures, and introduce new uses with rigor and restraint.

The result is an architecture that does not merely preserve or transform, but interprets: one capable of establishing continuity between memory and invention, permanence and change, material authenticity and contemporary life.

Signature Projects

Among the studio’s most celebrated works are the restoration of Lanfranchi Palace, the Verdi Theatre, and the reconstruction of the San Michele in Borgo complex in Pisa; the Public Library of Senigallia; the Museum of Sacred Art at San Frediano in Lucca; the Ducal Palace of Guastalla; and the adaptive reuse of the former Santa Marta military bakery in Verona.

These projects reflect the breadth of the studio’s experience across restoration, adaptive reuse, public architecture, cultural institutions, and complex urban contexts. Though diverse in scale and program, they share a common approach: the ability to engage historical structures and sites without nostalgia, while introducing new spatial relationships, new civic meanings, and a clearly contemporary architectural language.

Over time, many of these works have become reference points in the architectural debate on how to intervene within inherited fabric — not as isolated episodes, but as part of a coherent and long-standing body of work developed across different cities, typologies, and historical conditions.

Massimo Carmassi receiving the 2015 Gold Medal for Italian Architecture
Who We Are - Recognition And Legacy, Milan 002

Recognition and Legacy

Carmassi Architecture has received major international awards and distinctions, including the Gold Medal for Italian Architecture awarded by the Triennale di Milano Foundation, the National Tercas Architecture Prize, and the Heinrich Tessenow Gold Medal.

An equally significant form of recognition comes from the Italian state itself. A substantial group of works by the studio has been included in the official Censimento delle architetture italiane dal 1945 ad oggi (Census of Italian Architecture from 1945 to the Present), promoted by the Direzione Generale Creatività Contemporanea (Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity) of the Ministero della Cultura (Ministry of Culture).

Who We Are - Recognition And Legacy, Milan 002

This is not a generic online directory, but part of a national research and documentation programme launched in 2002 by the former DARC – Direzione Generale per l’Arte e l’Architettura Contemporanee (Directorate-General for Contemporary Art and Architecture). Through a public platform developed with regional offices of the Ministry, local authorities, universities and specialised research centres, it identifies and documents works considered significant in the history of contemporary Italian architecture.

Inclusion in this census means that a work is recognised not only critically, but also within an official national framework of historical, bibliographical and architectural relevance. The works currently associated with Carmassi can be consulted through the Ministry’s official filtered query.

This legacy continues within the studio and is now actively shared with Lorenzo Carmassi, whose contribution to architectural reflection and public debate further strengthens its profile. He has also been appointed delegated President of Confrestauro Sicilia, the Sicilian branch of Confrestauro, the Italian association that brings together professionals, companies, and experts active in restoration and the conservation of built heritage. This role further reinforces the studio’s presence within a wider national network devoted to the protection, enhancement, and future of architectural heritage.

This international and academic presence is not a secondary aspect of the studio’s identity, but an integral part of its way of working and communicating architecture. Exhibitions, lectures, conferences, and public presentations have long accompanied the development of Carmassi Architecture, allowing its projects, methods, and reflections to circulate beyond the building site and enter a wider cultural conversation.

This dimension of public engagement continues today through the studio’s ongoing participation in lectures, symposia, exhibitions, and editorial initiatives, in which architectural practice is presented not only through completed works, but also through drawings, research, critical reflection, and direct exchange with institutions, scholars, students, and professional audiences. It is through this continuous dialogue that the studio’s work has maintained both visibility and relevance across different contexts and generations.

The Network Behind the Work: Collaborators, Construction Sites, and Craftsmanship
Who We Are - Network Behind 001

The Network Behind the Work

At Carmassi Architecture, the core of the studio is made up of its two leading partners — Massimo and Lorenzo Carmassi — who personally oversee each project from concept to completion. Their shared vision and complementary expertise ensure a direct, cohesive, and highly responsive design process.

Rather than relying on a fixed internal structure, the studio embraces a flexible and dynamic model: project teams are assembled ad hoc, drawing from a trusted network of collaborators — architects, graphic designers, visualizers, and consultants — carefully selected to suit the specific needs of each commission.

What truly sets the studio apart is the solid web of professional relationships built and refined over more than five decades of continuous practice. This includes long-standing collaborations with structural and MEP engineers, as well as with some of the most reliable and experienced construction firms, artisans, and suppliers of materials and furnishings — from lighting and woodwork to metal fabrication and custom finishes.

This deep integration between design and execution enables the studio to guarantee not only the quality of its ideas, but also their realization. It is a working method that allows for agility without compromise, making it possible to take on projects of any scale or complexity with clarity, confidence, and continuity.
