2026, 25 September, Ragusa - CONFRESTAURO conference on restoration, regeneration and care of the historic centre of Ragusa, conceived and scientifically coordinated by Lorenzo Carmassi

“Restauro, riqualificazione e cura del centro storico di Ragusa” (“Restoration, Regeneration and Care of the Historic Centre of Ragusa”) is a public conference promoted by CONFRESTAURO APS — Delegazione Sicilia and held in Ragusa on 25 September 2026. Conceived and scientifically coordinated by Lorenzo Carmassi, the event brings together representatives of institutions, heritage bodies, professional organisations, universities, research networks and technical specialists to address the conservation, reuse and contemporary care of historic urban fabric.

The conference considers Ragusa and its historic centre as a field in which architectural culture, planning, UNESCO heritage management, restoration, public assets, protection, applied research, CAM criteria, construction techniques, traditional and innovative materials, energy transition, moisture control and durability must be understood as interconnected aspects of a common project for the existing city. The programme is structured in a morning session devoted to Ragusa and the historic heritage and an afternoon session focused on restoration, research, materials, technical innovation and durability, concluding with the round table “Dalla conferenza a un’agenda per Ragusa”.

Lorenzo Carmassi opens the scientific programme with “Ragusa, forma e materia della città storica”, a curatorial and visual introduction to the city’s urban structure, stratifications, fragilities and potential. Later in the morning he presents “Il restauro come progetto di conoscenza: conservare, rifunzionalizzare e trasformare senza perdita di identità”, addressing restoration as a knowledge-based design practice capable of combining conservation, reuse and architectural transformation without erasing the identity of the historic fabric.

The scientific conception and coordination by Lorenzo Carmassi is supported by the organisational coordination of Maria Luisa Zerilli for CONFRESTAURO APS, contributing to the development of the programme, institutional and technical coordination, and operational organisation of the conference.

The conference runs from 09:30 to 18:00 at Villa Carlotta Boutique Hotel, with registration from 09:00.
