2026, 18-19 September, Palermo - IV SIRA Conference on architectural restoration and the urban dimension with Lorenzo Carmassi

The IV SIRA Conference, “Restauro dell’architettura e dimensione urbana. Conoscenza, progetto e strumenti per la città esistente” (“Architectural Restoration and the Urban Dimension. Knowledge, Design and Tools for the Existing City”), takes place in Palermo on 18–19 September 2026 and is promoted by SIRA — Società Italiana per il Restauro dell’Architettura. The conference focuses on the role of architectural restoration at the urban scale, addressing the existing city, historic centres, stratified urban fabrics and built heritage as interconnected fields of knowledge, conservation and transformation.

On 18 September, Lorenzo Carmassi presents the contribution “Restauro e città esistente: continuità, riuso e nuova abitabilità nell’esperienza di Carmassi Studio” (“Restoration and the Existing City: Continuity, Reuse and New Habitability in the Experience of Carmassi Studio”), co-authored with Massimo Carmassi. The presentation is included in Session 4.3, “Agire alla dimensione urbana: casi studio e progetti di restauro”, chaired through the roles of Rapporteur Emanuele Morezzi and Discussant Antonio Pugliano. The session is scheduled from 15:15 to 18:00 at the Department of Architecture, University of Palermo, Building 14, Ground Floor, Aula C06-C07-C08.

The Carmassi Studio contribution examines restoration as a project of continuity between historic fabric, new use and urban life, focusing on the capacity of architectural interventions to reactivate relationships between buildings, public space and the existing city.
