Restoration, Office architecture
1985
Pisa, Italy
In Via Santa Maria in Pisa, the palace, unified in the 19th century by architect Alessandro Della Gherardesca with a neoclassical façade and frescoed staircase, was restored respecting the irregular layout inherited from its medieval core, preserving Venetian and terracotta floors and well-crafted fixtures. A richly decorated room left untouched for eighty years and rare neo-Egyptian frescoes beneath wallpaper were uncovered. Consolidation of plaster and stuccoes enriched the work, while adaptation to office use required a raised floor with discreet joints and light frames in iron, brass, wood, and glass harmonizing with the historic context.
